Frequently Asked Questions
Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions — especially when you’re looking for affirming care that fits your life, your values, and your budget.
Here are answers to the questions we hear most often at Resonance Columbus.
-
Affirming therapy starts from the belief that LGBTQ+ identities and relationships are valid, valuable, and worth celebrating.
At Resonance Columbus, that means:
You won’t have to educate your therapist about your identity, pronouns, or relationships.
Your experiences are met with curiosity and expertise — not judgment or assumptions. We affirm all of who you are: your gender, sexuality, chosen family, and lived experience. We’re part of the LGBTQ+ community — both Gina and Jonah bring lived understanding and deep clinical training in affirming care.
In practice, this looks like:
Using your correct name and pronouns from day one. Understanding the nuances of coming out, chosen family, and LGBTQ+ relationship structures. Celebrating your identity as a strength, not a problem to solve. Providing assessment letters for gender-affirming care (HRT, surgeries) Supporting you through both joy and struggle with empathy and skill.

We currently focus on individual therapy but work deeply with relationship and family dynamics in our sessions.
If you’re interested in couples or family therapy, let us know during your consultation — we’ll discuss whether that service is available or add you to our interest list for future offerings.
-
That’s completely normal — and honestly, it’s a sign you’re thinking carefully about what you need.
Here’s what we believe:
You don’t have to be “broken” to benefit from therapy. Ambivalence is welcome here — you don’t have to want therapy for it to help. Therapy can be practical, not just emotional — sometimes it’s about tools, not just feelings.
Our free 15-minute consultation is designed for this exact situation: no pressure, just a conversation about whether therapy might be useful right now.
-
Our self-pay rate is $125 per 50-minute session.
We also offer Session Savings Plans that help you save 5–15% when you prepay for 4, 8, or 12 sessions.

Insurance FAQs:
Do you take my plan? We accept most major insurers.
What will I owe? Depends on your deductible, copay and benefits. Once your insurance is verified we should be able to confirm before your first session.
How does billing work? We use a third-party insurance biller called Headway. Claims and co-pays are processed through them. You’ll get an invoice for any copay or co-insurance.
Can I use my HSA or FSA? Yes.
What if I have an out-of-network plan? For out-of-network plans we will bill you directly for the full amount and can provide you a superbill you can use for reimbursement. Check to see if your insurance reimburses in these situations.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer - therapy is as unique as you are.
Short term: 4-8 sessions for specific challenges (coming out, stress, life transitions).
Medium term: Several months for identity work, family dynamics, symptom reduction.
Long term: Ongoing support for deep growth and sustained change.
We’ll check in regularly about your goals and progress. Consistency matters more than duration - regular sessions (weekly or biweekly) lead to the most meaningful results.
-
Your first session is about connection, not a checklist.
Before your session:
You’ll complete a brief intake form through our secure client portal. We’ll send you a welcome email with what to expect and how to prepare.
During your session (50–55 minutes):
We’ll talk about what brought you here and what kind of support you’re looking for. You can share as much or as little as feels right — there’s no pressure. We’ll discuss your goals for therapy and what would make sessions feel helpful. You can ask any questions about the process or approach.
After your session:
We’ll schedule your next appointment if it feels like a good fit. You’ll have access to secure messaging for follow-up questions between sessions.
You set the pace — we’ll build from there together.
